Only Rest Remains

There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His.

Hebrews 4:9,10

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:13

The ever living rest of God! Only in Christ, only to those who are of Christ, is this divine rest assured and made ready. This is the perfect provision of a day given to us by God. This day is His Sabbath-day rest! We now can live in this day of His. His day of Rest.

God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:

“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.

Hebrews 4:7-10 NIV

This rest is the rest of Christ Himself. It is the rest of the finished work of our salvation in Christ. It is a rest of perfect completion and ceasing of all 'have to do'! This rest is the rest that remains - faith, hope and love. Only in Christ can we experience this abiding rest. As we abide in the vine of Christ we abide in hope, faith and love. The greatest of these is love because God so loved the world that He gave His Son to die for us. Through His death we now have the God-kind of life, eternal life which is living hope and faith.

The rest that remains for us is Christ Himself. Only in Him do we cease from our works because He has already done the work! This is the finished work of salvation, the work of laying down His life to be a propitiation for us through His blood so that now we by faith are made right in the sight of God. This is what righteousness looks like - having peace with our God through the cross of Christ. Now that is perfect rest.

The book of Hebrews outlines how we enter this finished work, this perfect rest - it is by believing what God has done for us through Jesus Christ.

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.

Hebrews 4:1,2

Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Hebrews 4:11

Today be found in the rest that remains and abides forever. Be found in Christ!
