Living Water

Updated: Nov 6, 2020

Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

John 4:13,14

An encounter with Jesus in the heat of the day is always transformational and is an open door to the divine life He offers. In the book of John we read about a Samaritan woman, who at the noon hour was found by an ancient deep well - looking to draw up water. There she encountered the Ancient of Days, the Living Word of God - Jesus.

Meeting the Living Word - the very well of God - is meeting the source of eternal life. This divine life proceeding from God, who is Love, is only revealed in Jesus. This life is the living water that Jesus offered the woman. Only Jesus can grant us this eternal living drink as He alone shows us the Father and the life that is freely given to us in His Son (John 14:9).

The life that is found in Christ is the ultimate freedom from our past and from that which had kept us bound. Only in the presence of the Word of God is all matter uncovered and the intents of the heart fully exposed, so that all be laid bare before Him (who is Truth). Herewith is where freedom lies. His truth alone can set us free so that we can experience the liberating love of God - which is eternal life.

The living water that the Samaritan woman drew that day released her from her past and from the sin that had so easily ensnared her. At the Well of Life she received forgiving mercy to sin no more and to become a follower of Christ. His truth set her free indeed.

Once this woman tasted of the freedom Jesus offered her to thirst no more, she left all behind, including her old water pot. Immediately she went out to pour the living water she received from Jesus to her community. This drink of eternal life that the Samaritan woman received gave her boldness to confront that which had enslaved her and had brought her shame.

In the heat of the day, that woman realized that the only drink that can satisfy is a revelation of the Love of God - that God truly so loved us that He sent His Son to rescue us from all that had held us captive. This woman tasted of His life and it wiped her slate clean to receive a new identity - to become a proclaimer of the Truth.

Eternal Life is what a child of God now has. The apostle John testified that he who has the Son has Life (1 John 5:12). Thus the life that is in the Son of God is the very liberation drink that frees us from the thirst found in the world that kept us longing and needy. In Christ we now have full divine life - the full expression of the Love of God. There is nothing more satisfying than to know that we are loved by God and that His life in us has released us from all enslavement to the world.

Today, in Christ, you are free to thirst no more and have been empowered to become a proclaimer of Truth - to offer living water to another.
